Waterborne polyurethane/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) hybrid materials reinforced with exfoliated organoclay were prepared. The emulsion particle size increased as the contents of PMMA or organoclay was increased. X-ray diffraction patterns showed the effective exfoliation of the silicate layer in the polymer matrix. Tensile modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break, hardness, scratch resistance, water resistance, and thermal resistance of cast film samples were enhanced compared with the pristine polymer, when reinforced with 1 similar to 5 phr organoclay, with marginal reduction in transparency.
