Problems associated with use of finely dispersed substances in polymeric materials are discussed based on the example of the detonation nanodiamonds (DND). A procedure in order to obtain two fractions, conditionally large-size (DND-1) and small-size (DND- 2), was developed. It is shown that modification of polymers with only "large-size" (DND-1) improved the stress-strain properties, which is not predicted by the classical reinforcement theory. The DND-2 did not result in a reinforcement effect. These specific features of nanoparticles need be taken into account in their application in the practice of polymer nanocomposites. A phenomenological theory of the reinforcement effect in the corresponding nanocomposites is suggested.
