The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of both the long term ageing-treated (650 °C for 750 h and 2000 h, respectively) and the solution-annealed type 316 stainless steel in a boiling 42% MgCl2 solution was studied using a slow strain rate technique. It was found that materials aged-treated at 650 °C for 750 h and 2000 h, respectively, failed by transgranular stress corrosion cracking (T-SCC) and the solution-annealed material failed by intergranular stress corrosion cracking (1-SCC). The KJSCC of tne solution-annealed material was much higher than that of the aged materials. The maximum stress corrosion crack rate in the material which was aged at 650 °C for 2000 h was slightly higher than that in the material which was aged at 650 °C for 750 h, and the latter rate was a little higher than that in the solution-annealed material.
