Since the discovery of high-rc superconducting cuprates [1], a number of studies have been made on the physical and chemical properties of cuprates. Some of these cuprates have been studied in applications of the NO.V decomposition catalysis and gas sensors [2-13]. The past results reported by Misono and co-workers [2-4, 12, 13] and Shimada et al. [5] suggested that the redox properties of copper ions and the resultant oxygen vacancies play an important role in the catalytic conversion of NO. Also, Machida et al. [14] reported the NO intercalation properties of layered cuprate La2_.vBavSrCu206 (O≤x≤l.O). These NO intercalation properties were considered to result in the strong interactions within an interlayer in double-layered cuprates. Recently, we investigated the chemical states of NO over LaBaSrCi) using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) [15]. These results suggested the surface adsorption of NO group corresponding to NO trapped by oxygen vacancies [15]. In the present study, the surface adsorption of NO and NO2 over LaBaSrCiiaOf, was investigated by XPS. We have also discussed the surface reaction for the NOV (x - 1 and 2) intercalation mechanism of this compound.
