Measurements of laser-induced shock waves in carbon epoxy composites

Shock loads can be generated by high-speed impact, explosives or by intense short-term energy deposition [1]. In the laser-matter interaction under consideration, the inward momentum is imparted to the target by the ablation of the hot plasma rather than by the momentum of the laser photons themselves. The heated material is blown off the target and the ablation drives a shock wave into the target. Nowadays, laser-induced shock waves are widely used for aquiring information on the behaviour of materials under high dynamic pressure [4], as well as for material processing. Many experiments have been carried out in order to investigate the laser-induced shock-wave pressure in aluminium, alloy or copper; however, in the present work, shock pressure measurements in carbon fibre epoxy composite were performed using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) gauges made by ourselves.
