Previous work [1-3] has shown that the value of the adhesive fracture energy, Gc, for a crack propagating cohesively through the adhesive layer of a bonded joint may depend upon the thickness and the width of the joint. These geometry effects are particularly pronounced when a relatively tough adhesive is employed, which possesses a relatively high value of Gc. For all these observations it should be noted that the width of the joint, and the linearity of the load-displacement trace, must meet the requirements [4] for linear-elastic fracture-mechanics (LEFM) to be a valid approach.
