We examine some results of the analysis of the contact stresses and displacements in articulated joints of two types: the joints with sliding bearings in which the shaft rotates continuously or periodically relative to the lug, and the hinged joints with stationary shafts. We describe an analytic-experimental technique for determining the fretting fatigue that is based on use of the data from the calculation of the contact pressures and the relative displacements of the contact surfaces of the shaft and the lugs by the finite-element and boundary-element methods - and also the fatigue tests of articulated joints of differing geometry. We present a technique for evaluating the fretting fatigue of the other articulated joints that significantly reduces the difficulty and the duration of the fatigue tests.
