CVRD takes a big step into the international coal market with its purchase of AMCI Holdings Australia

Brazilian-based power house CVRD purchased AMCI Holdings Australia last week for a price of 660 million US dollars. In addition, CVRD will assume AMCI's debts, which are close to 157 million Australia dollars. AMCI's coal properties in Australia in the Hunter Valley and the Bowen Basin in Queensland, will go far to helping CVRD realize its goal of becoming a major global coal producer. The transaction will give CVRD 8.0 million tonnes/year of coal production and reserves totaling 103 million tonnes. CVRD plans to produce 30 million tonnes/year of coal from AMCI's Australian assets, and the Belvedere property also in Australia, as well as from Moatize in Mozambique.
