CAT Truck Teams With Michelin Tire To Increase Large Mining Truck's Payload

Caterpillar (CAT) recently announced its 797B mining truck, the second edition of the largest mining truck. The new model features an increase from 60 to 380 tons in nominal payload with a standard body. Other features-including an increase in gross engine power from 3,400 hp to 3,550 hp-maintain the 797 performance capabilities and enable the truck to reduce hauling cost per ton by 3 percent to 5 percent when compared to the 797, which the 797B replaces. CAT teamed with Michelin to develop an optimized radial tire for the 797B, making Michelin the first manufacturer to put the tire to use in real-operating conditions. The 59/80R63 XDR tire is designed for trucks operating in large surface mines and is currently being tested in the oil sands of Canada. This new radial tire is more than 13-feet(ft) tail, nearly 5-ft wide, weighs more than 5 tons, and can support a load of more than 100 tons per tire.
