Germination responses of seeds of three Verbena X hybrida cultivars to temperature and scarification treatments.

The effects of constant or alternating temperatures and two scarification methods on germination of seeds of V. hybrida cultivars Amulet, Basia and Malgosia were investigated. The fastest germination occurred at 30-35鳦, but at these temperatures only 5-30% of seeds germinated. After 50 days of germination the highest percentage was obtained at 10-15鳦. Alternating temperatures (20/30鳦) advanced this process but did not improve seed germination capacity. Both basal (hilum removal) and apical scarification resulted in high seed germinability. Apical scarification reduced the mean germination time from 5.5 to 1.1 days for Amulet, from 5.3 to 1.1 days for Basia and from 7.3 to 2.2 days for Malgosia.
