A method of strawberry plant regeneration from leaf explants of in vitro-grown plants is described. Of the 5 genotypes tested (cultivars Elsanta, Senga Sengana and Kaster, and clones K1349 and K1356), the best shoot regeneration rate was obtained with Kaster (86.7-100%) and the worst with Elsanta (0-27.8%). Regeneration frequency from leaf lamina explants was higher than from whole leaf (leaf lamina with a petiole and stipules) explants (27.8-50% vs. 10-40%). Kaster regenerated shoots from leaf lamina explants by direct organogenesis, whereas regeneration in all other cases was callus-mediated. The best medium for regeneration of Kaster, Elsanta and the 2 clones consisted of MS salts and vitamins supplemented with 1.5 mg benzyladenine (BA) and 0.1mg IBA/litre. Senga Sengana shoots regenerated best on medium composed of MS minerals and B5 vitamins and supplemented with 3.0 mg BA and 0.25 mg IBA/litre.
