Mapping Explicit Islands in a Tacit Sea:Insights into Dynamics of KnowledgeManagement

A popular paradigm in Knowledge Management states that data istransformed to create information and information is transformed to createknowledge. This paradigm is represented as a pyramid-shaped hierarchywith knowledge at the top, information in the middle, and data on the bottom.In a previous work, the "Explicit Islands in a Tacit Sea (EITS)" metaphor wasdeveloped as a better alternative paradigm. In this paper, a formal mappingof the EITS metaphor will be developed that shows how tacit knowledge,explicit knowledge, information, and data change over time for individuals,groups, and organizations. The purpose of this mapping is to provide read-ers insights into the dynamics of knowledge creation and the knowledge man-agement lifecycle.
