The Extent of Green IT Adoption and itsDriving and Inhibiting factors:An Exploratory Study

The role of information and communications technologies (ICTs) incausing and resolving environmental and sustainability issues has been at-tracting policy makers' and consultants' interests but remains a less researchedtopic. Usually coined as "Green IT", each stage of the IT resources lifecyclefrom manufacturing to usage and disposal poses environmental concernssuch as power consumption, greenhouse gas emission and land and watercontamination. Beside environmental sustainability, Greening IT has beentouted to offer opportunities for reducing the total cost of IT operations. Thispaper reports on an exploratory survey of Green IT adoption among Austra-lian and New Zealand organizations including the factors that influence adop-tion. The findings indicate that the breadth and depth of Green IT adoptionamong the surveyed organizations is at the early stage of maturity. The paperdiscusses some of the reasons that might explain the current status of GreenIT initiatives and draws insights for further studies.
