Big changes, almost seismic in nature, are coming to the global thermal coal market, Wood Mackenzie's Chairman of Coal, Jeff Watkins, told those in attendance at the Coaltrans Amsterdam Conference. The first big shift in the market is expected to occur in 2011 when China replaces Japan as the world's largest thermal coal importer. "We forecast that in 2011, total thermal coal imports for China will reach 122 million tonnes, compared to a forecast of 120 million tonnes for Japan," Watkins said.
