7th international symposium on cell/tissue injury and cytoprotection/ organoprotection - Focus on the gastrointestinal tract: Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, September 9-11, 2012

The Honolulu symposium was the 7th in this series of international symposia devoted to the study of mechanisms of cell tissue injury as well as to the pharmacological protection against the injury in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The 1st was held in Germany in 1986. The subsequent 3 symposia were in the United States, the 5th in the Ukraine, the 6th in Russia, and this 7th symposium was located in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. The objectives of this meeting are to provide a lively forum for experts to present and integrate new findings regarding the mechanisms, manifestations, diagnosis, and consequences of cell and tissue injury. One of the goals is to review emerging concepts with respect to reversible or irreversible injury to a few or numerous cells, for example, not only that it does not necessarily lead to tissue damage but actually results in mucosal protection. A further goal is to transfer the new knowledge about cell and tissue injury to pharmacologic prevention of tissue damage in organ systems. Our specific areas of interest at this symposium include new developments in the molecular mechanisms of cell and tissue injury, especially in the GI tract.
