The Memoirs of the Royal Academy of Science of Turin, published on Feb. 21, 1847, contains a paper by Professor Ascanio Sobrero, entitled "Concerning some new explosive compounds obtained, by means of the action of nitric acid on organic vegetable substances." The first portion of the paper summarises the work published by him in the previous year on nitromannite, &c, and he then proceeds as follows:-"The oxidabil-ity of glycerine is very great; nitric acid reacts violently upon it and produces oxalic acid, although it would seem probable that this is only the ultimate degree of oxidation to which it attains through intermediate stages corresponding to more complicated substances.
