The variation of soluble sugar and sucrose in ear of maize (Zea mays L.) and its relationship with grain starch accumulation were analyzed in this study. The experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Dehui City of Jilin Province. Two maize varieties, ZD 958 and ND 364, grown in fields in black soils of Northeast China were used in this experiment. The results showed that the changes of soluble sugar of various parts in ear of two maize varieties showed the same tendencies, and soluble sugar concentration in two maize varieties increased from silking period and achieved the highest level at grain filling period, and then declined from their maxima and remained at the lower level at dough period. Sucrose concentration in husk for both maize varieties increased first and then decreased, and reached peak values at grain filling period, which was consistent with the changes in silk and cob, and highest decline rate of sucrose was found in husk. Thus, sucrose concentration of grain was increasing along with the maize growing, and reached peak values at dough period. No significant relationship was found between soluble sugar concentration in husk, silk and cob and starch accumulation in grain. Significant relationship was found between soluble sugar concentration and starch accumulation in grain. Sucrose concentration in husk, silk, cob and grain significantly or very significantly correlated with grain starch concentration.
