Investigation of yield and adaptation of ten selected genotypes of tomato under subtropical climate conditions (Ahvaz).

Ten selected tomato genotypes of diverse origin were grown in Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, Iran, in a randomized block design with 3 replications for 2 successive seasons (2009 and 2010). The Cheff cultivar, which is more cultured in the region, was used as a control. The aim was to evaluate and select tomato cultivars which could be grown for raw materials and future breeding, taking into account their nutritional composition. Highly signicant differences were encountered among the different genotypes for most of the generative characters, such as time of maturity, plant height, fruit wt. at 1st and 2nd fruit, fruit wt. (1st, 2nd and 3rd harvests) and total yield per plant. Genotype No.16 (3.42 kg per plant) proved to be high yielding under subtropical climate conditions in comparison to other genotypes and the control cultivar (Cheff). Fresh tomatoes were evaluated for the following fruit quality parameters: lycopene, vitamin C, firmness, TSS, titratable acid (TA), TSS/TA ratio and pH. Mean comparison of genotypes revealed that genotype No.28 had the highest amount of pH, TSS, TA and TSS/TA ratio and genotype No.36 had the highest amount of vitamin C (38.30 mg 100 g--1) and lycopene (26.86 mg/kg). It was shown that some genotypes may be useful for adaptation under subtropical climate (Ahvaz) conditions and may be used in future breeding.
