performance of a single effect falling film evaporator was compared with the results obtained from a prediction model based on available heat transfer correlations. In order to improve the wetting of tubes, a four stage calandria design was adopted. When reconstituted milk, having 9 and 13% solids was being concentrated in the evaporator at 60 degrees C and 70 degrees C, respectively, the water evaporation rate, final concentration and welting index were found to vary 25-35% and 0.2 to 0.28 m(3)/m.h, respectively. These values were 98-113%, 95-120% and 67-80% respectively, of the values of the corresponding parameters predicted from the developed model.
