CHIP and PIN Technology: A POS Solution for Restaurants

Over the last few decades, the evolution of information technology (IT) in an increasingly competitive environment has been dynamic and unpredictable. There is no doubt that IT advances have radically altered the way many industries now conduct theirbusiness (Ansel & Dyer, 1999). New technologies have served smart business solutions that have thrust industries to achieve greater levels of internal proficiency in core operational areas. These innovations have also had a tremendous impact on the external business environment, in particular, at the business to customer (B2C) level. This paper serves to introduce one such technology, the Chip and PIN smart card system, at the forefront of change in the European business environment and the implicationsfor adopting a similar strategy in the United States. More specifically this research note examines the use of Chip and PIN at the point-of-sale (POS) in restaurants as a measure to combat credit card fraud and potentially improve the tarnished reputation of restaurants who may be oblivious to fraudulent activities that occur in their businesses.
