Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infectious diseases affecting men and especially women, with increased frequency related to gender and age. In general, treatment is empiric and regional, with several expanded-spectrum antimicrobials supported most of the time, by microbiological and epidemiological data provided by antibiotic resistance surveillance systems. When considering the worldwide spread of bacterial resistance determinants, prospective regional and international data on aetiology and drug susceptibility patterns of bacteria related to UTI are important.
