On the occurrence of Hoferellus gilsoni (Debaisieux, 1925) in the urinary bladder of American eel, Anguilla rostrata LeSueur, in insular Newfoundland, Canada

An outbreak of H. gilsoni was diagnosed in American eels collected between 30 June and 16 September 1996 in north-eastern Newfoundland. Three species of myxosporeans were found in 51 eels sampled. H. gilsoni was identified in the urinary bladder (28eels), Myxidium giardi in gill tissue and the urinary bladder (3 eels) and an unidentified species of Myxobolus in the intestine and associated mesentery (2 eels). This appears to be the first report of H. gilsoni in North America.
