Histological and electron microscopic study on Macrobrachium muscle virus (MMV) infection in the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man), cultured in Taiwan

Histopathological and ultrastructural observations of Macrobrachium muscle virus (MMV) infection in cultured freshwater prawn postlarvae from Taiwan were described. Histopathology revealed progressive segmental myofibre degeneration of muscle fibresand necrobiotic myopathy. Prominent shrinkage of the myofibrils caused by progressive loss of parenchyma led to diffuse areas of myofibre disorganization. Clinical signs in affected prawns were similar to idiopathic muscle necrosis (IMN) syndrome with the exceptional addition of dense cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in the affected muscles. This appears to be the first histopathological and ultrastructural study of MMV infection in freshwater prawn in Taiwan.
