Grey horse melanotic condition: a pigmentary disorder.

58 grey horses affected with generalized progressive leukotrichia, 95% of which were Spanish Pure Breed, aged 6 months-23 years old and mostly males, were examined. In 52 of the 58 horses, dark melanotic nodules were observed on different anatomicalstructures, particularly the ventral surface of the tail. Clinical, histological and immunohistochemical results suggested non-neoplastic pigmentary disorders, possibly due to a failure in melanin degradation as the animal hair becomes progressively less pigmented with age.
