According to current concepts,rapid eye movement sleep (REM sleep) is regulated by brainstem neuronal groups located predominantly in the boundary area of pons and mesencephalon.The only group of brainstem cells whose destruction leads to loss of electrophysiological REM sleep is the oral reticular pons nucleus-Nucleus reticularis pontis oralis (NRPO) [2].
