A new rat model for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (Iddm)

In early 1997 three consecutive litters of one breeding pair of LEW.1AR1/Ztm rats showed in a small proportion of the offspring (Fx+13) a diabetic syndrome characterised by weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria, glycosuria, ketonuria, hyperglycaemia and hypoinsulinaemia, After it had been demonstrated that the syndrome was heritable by mating diabetic males to non-diabetic female littermates a diabetic mutant strain was established. Offspring of the background strain from which all breeders closely related to the mutant bearing founder pair had been eliminated have not shown any incidence of diabetes since. Here we describe a new coisogenic strain carrying a diabetogenetic gene, LEW.1AR1/Ztm-Iddm, which like the BB rat (ROSSINI 1985; BUSCHARD 1996) and the LETL (KAWANO 1991) rat, develops spontaneously an insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
