Commentary: an important step forward in the treatment of SVC syndrome: rapid relief of symptoms using the Trellis system.

In this issue of the Journal of Endovascular Therapy, O'Sullivan and colleagues report their experience using pharmacomechanical thrombectomy to treat superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. SVC syndrome has been a source of significant morbidity and severe disability for patients whose underlying disease may make their life expectancy quite short. Typically, SVC syndrome results from malignant tumor growth and resultant compression and eventual occlusion of the SVC; however, in recent years, the increasing use of long-term central venous catheters has made this a more common etiology. Patients may suffer from numerous symptoms, including facial swelling, engorgement, cough, and dyspnea. Due to the severe discomfort and debilitating effects of SVC syndrome, techniques to provide effective palliation are necessary.
