Measurement of nitrite in plasma and serum: still a challenging analytical task.

I read with great interest the article by da Silva Pereira and colleagues (1), reporting on an automated technique based on the Griess reaction for the measurement of nitrite in plasma from EDTA-anticoagulated human blood and its use to measure plasma nitrite in healthy overnight fasted volunteers. Also, it is very interesting to read that da Silva Pereira et al. (1) referred to the need of implementing internal quality control (QC) in the analysis of nitrite in human plasma in clinical studies and in clinical chemistry. Although we agree with many points addressed by da Silva Pereira and colleagues, there are many issues which deserve a more careful and critical discussion.
