Severe forms of amniotic band syndrome (ABS) can be detected by sonography during routine anatomic screening examinations in the second trimester. However, current sonographic practice guidelines recommend documentation of the extremities (presence or absence of) but do not require evaluation of the fetal hands and feet. Therefore, it is reasonable to infer that the type of minor ABS defect described in this case may not be identified until after birth.
