Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers A Timeline of Historical Events in Sonography and the Development of the SDMS: In the Beginning

This is the first of a series of articles about the formation of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS). A brief review of historical events that led up to the discovery and application of sonography as a medical diagnostic tool is presented. Further detail may be found in the article by Joseph Woo, "A Short History of the Development of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology."1 Much of the historical development of the SDMS was paraphrased from Joan Baker's study, which recounted the development and creation of the organization for sonography.
