SI or non-SI units - which better match day-to-day imprecision?

In 1966, the Internationa] Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) recommended that clinical laboratories use International System (SI) units for result reporting (1). This suggestion was further strengthened by the publication in 2003 of the ISO 15189 requirement that laboratory results be reported in SI units or units traceable to SI units (2). Despite these recommendations, many laboratories continue to use non-SI units in some or all of their reports (3).
