It was a typical busy day in the emergency department. I had about 1 hour left on my shift and was glad the day was coming to an end. My last patient was Jessie, an 18-year-old Hispanic male. He had been swimming and tubing in an area lake and had scraped his face badly. I introduced myself. As I began my assessment I noticed a sense of hostility. The responses to my questions were blunt and Jessie would not make eye contact.
