Both Ethel Johns and Isabel M. Stewart went on to become preeminent international leaders in nursing education. Johns became the first director of nursing at the University of British Columbia in 1919. Her passion for justice and equity was exemplified in a 1925 report, "buried" for 60 years, which revealed the racist character of relations between white institutions and black nursing students (Grypma, 2003). Stewart became one of America s most recognized nurses, providing stellar leadership at Columbia Teachers College in New York, where she worked from 1908 until her death in 1963 (Downer, 1989).
