Don't wait for a hurricane—or tsunami— to draft a crisis management plan

I'm now a veteran of a tsunami evacuation, thanks to being on the island of Hawaii when the 8.9 earthquake hit Japan March 11, generating a wall of water that raced across the Pacific. What amazed me was the precision of the entire evacuation, thanksto an existing plan. Evacuation zones are listed in the phone book. Television and radio stations broadcasted the updates with instructions, and sirens blared every hour to remind people of the tsunami warning. In addition, hotel staff came door to doorwith a printed sheet of directions to the two nearby schools that were evacuation sites.
