Immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery: Who might benefit from the procedure?

A recent study by Serrano-Aguilar et al. shows no significant difference in surgical complications, visual acuity, and long-term visual function between immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) and delayed sequential bilateral cataract surgery (DSBCS). The study analyzed visual function with the Visual Function Index-14 questionnaire, which confirmed faster visual rehabilitation in the ISBCS group. Most questionnaires have been developed to verify the outcomes of first-eye cataract surgery. The evaluation of postoperative visual disability includes tasks that may be easily executed after cataract surgery in 1 eye, while others may require 2 eyes to perform without difficulty. Theoretically, a questionnaire should be sensitive enough to reveal the impact of second-eye cataract surgery. We believe that the Visual Symptoms and Quality of Life questionnaire developed for second-eye cataract surgery patients may be more suitable for comparing ISBCS and DSBCS.
