Personally, as a user of 2 of the laser platforms (Catalys and Lensx), I find docking with an applanation system (Lensx) easier and quicker, particularly in patients with small orbits, obesity, or positional limitations. I haye found that the ease of docking can be important because repeated docking attempts can lead to dramatic pupillary miosis. Nevertheless, intracameral mydriatics almost universally reverse the problem immediately. I understand that a newer, smaller patient interface should soon be released for the Catalys, making docking easier.
