The role of seasonal influenza vaccination in preventing pandemic 2009 influenza (H1N1) during a school outbreak.

An outbreak of influenza like illness (ILI) was reported in a middle school from October 10 to October 29, 2009. After influenza A infection was diagnosed, control measures were administered in the campus, including environmental disinfection, strict isolation of ILI cases and their close contacts, school closure and chemical prophylaxis. Altogether 210 (11.8%) students were confirmed as pandemic influenza infection by real-time PCR.2 An estimated 48.1% (101/210) of the patients were male and the median age was 17 years (range 15-20 years). Totally 1345 of 1783 students had been administered 2009 seasonal vaccination (Fluzone, Sanofi Pasteur, the trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine contained purified surface antigens of A/Brisbane/59/2007 (HlNl)-Iike, A/Brisbane/I0/2007 (H3N2)-like and B/Brisbane/60/2008-like) viruses as recommended by the WHO for the influenza season 2009/2010) 2 months prior to the influenza season beginning in October.
