This paper presents a survey on distances involving the symmetric groups S_n together with their applications in many contexts; for example: statistics, coding theory, computing, bell-ringing and so on, which were originally considered to be unrelated. THis preliminary study can hopefully stimulate interests in this area and, eventually, lead to a systematic study on this subject.
