The Analysis of Spontaneous Processes Using Equilibrium Thermodynamics

The venerable field of thermodynamics seems to offer little room for improvement in the didactic presentation of the fundamental concepts.Nevertheless,our years of combined experience in dealing with this fascinating subject (1- 3) have impressed upon us the difficulties and obstacles to a clear understanding encountered by both instructors and students.This is perhaps most true of concepts associated with the second law,and particularly those of relevance to spontaneous (irreversible) processes.
