摘要

A discussion of how the steric properties of strong bases affect their nucleophilicity is typically an early lesson in many organic chemistry courses. For example, ethoxide is a strong base and poor nucleophile. Likewise, steric crowding around the substrate carbon that holds the leaving group also affects the product distribution. Secondary alkyl halides are less susceptible to nucleophilic attack than primary alkyl halides and thus tgive greater quantities of the alkene products.
