Chemistry is taught via distance education in five continents (1). However, in the United States the field has been slow to develop. Even though Peterson's Guide to Distance Learning Programs 2002 (2) lists over 120 technology-mediated distance education (nonlaboratory) chemistry courses, a survey of American institutios reveals that, aside from some efforts (3,4), there are no established models of technology-based distance education programs for complete chemistry courses that include the laboratory. There are good reasons, however, to promote such courses.
