Enthalpy Costs of Making and Breaking Bonds: A Game of Generating Molecules with Proper Lewis Structures

An essential concept for beginning general and organic chemistry students is the Lewis structure representation of molecules. Although students are typically exposed to this elementary concept in general chemistry, they frequently have “forgotten” it when the time comes to apply the concept in organic chemistry. One factor in the failure of students to retain the Lewis structure concept may be the lack of effectiveness of the traditional lecture format relative to a more active learning process (1, 2). Games and puzzles represent an enjoyable method of requiring a student to actively participate in the learning process.
