Students in general chemistry constantly struggle with thedevelopment of knowledge and skills. The laboratory settingshould be an extension of the knowledge learned in lecture withthe added benefit of applying the knowledge in a hands-on,minds-on manner in which students must learn and use processskills to solve problems and complete laboratory exercises. Manychemistry laboratory courses have teaching assistants or instruc-tors demonstrating, showing, telling, and modeling differentprocess skills that will help students complete the laboratoryexercise. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect ofstudent self-reflection, using immediate videotape feedback anddirect instruction, on the development of certain process skillsof general chemistry students at the university level.
