Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) occurs with a frequency of about 1 in every 300 to 500 people and is therefore one of the most commonly occurring congenital metabolic disorders. It is estimated that at least 620,000 Americans are affected with FH. Unfortunately, large numbers of the populace with FH are undiag-nosed and consequently remain at increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Furthermore, even though highly effective lipid-lowering drugs are available, FH is often inadequately treated.
