Observations on comparative values of thyroxine (T_4) triiodothyronine (T_3), T_3 uptake and free thyroxine index (FTI) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of camel (Camelus dromedarius)

Blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were collected from the jugular vein and atlantooccipital space of fifty male dromedary camels at different age groups. The levels of serum thyroxine (T_4), triiodothyronine (T_3), T_3 uptake, free thyroxine index (FTI) and T_4 T_3 ratios measured by RIA using kits were 154.56 +- 23.03 nmol/ L, 2.61 +- 0.85 nmol/L, 26.62 +- 0.87 percent, 3.18 +- 0.41 and 70.54 +- 26.32, respectively in camels below 3 years of age. Age did not have a significant effect on serum T_4, T_3, T_3 uptake, FTI and T_4 : T_3 ratios of Iranian dromedary camels. The concentrations of T_3 and T_4 in CSF were below detection limits.
