Pharmaceutical companies, for so long highly successful in R&D and international marketing, are facing broader challenges in the fight to retain profit levels in their increasingly competitive global market. Within the USD400 billion-plus industry, there is intense and growing competition, demand for increased customization, volatile end-consumer demand and short product lifecycles. Add to that, the supply chain is now typically distributed across many countries, where different customs and cultures come into effect, and distribution is organized over various tiers. Lack of cooperation or collaboration over the supply chain could be critical, particularly where companies are expected to react immediately to sudden changes in demand.
