The trans-Pacific trade has been a swirling vortex of pricing, capacity, transit times and service. Everyone wants calmer waters, but is it possible? Trans-Pacific rates have been flat says Soren Skou, CEO of Maersk Line. Carriers have absorbed inflation and significant bunker cost increases, he explains. He points to slow steaming and other improvements in fuel efficiency along with moving to larger ships to reduce costs. And in those elements of comments he made at the TPM 13 (Trans-Pacific Maritime) conference, he points to some of the challenges and responses the whole maritime industry has faced. Is it enough?
