Mechel Otelu Rosu (Romania) commissions modernized steelmaking complex

On June 7, Russia’s Mechel launched modernized steelmaking complex which is equipped with a new EAF (810,000 t)and a billet conticaster (600,000 t) at Romania-based subsidiary Otelu Rosu. The furnace was supplied by Germany’sFuchs Technology. The new machine operates on the basis of COSS system which uses heat from waste gases forpreheating scrap metal, enabling the plant to significantly cut expenses (on raw materials and power) and improve thequality of steel. Notably, COSS equipment at Otelu Rosu will be the first such in Europe and the third in the world. Acompany source says the project is worth about $48.7 million. The plant was also equipped with a long product mill(about 300,000 t) and a scrap preparation section.
