摘要

The science and technology of adhesion is of crucial importance in adhesively bonded engineering structures, as adhesive bonding offers many advantages vis-avis other joining methods (riveting, nailing, welding).A quick glance at the mechanics literature will evince that there is a high tempo of interest and research activity in 'Joint Mechanics'. The topic of joint mechanics subsumes various subtopics, viz., stress determination and stress distribution; failure modes and failure criteria; determination of true properties of adhesives; determination of energy release rates of various modes of failure; stress intensity factors in adhesive joints. Adhesive joints are subjected to various kinds of stresses (originating from various sources) and thus stress determination and stress distribution in adhesive joints is very critical for the performance of adhesive joints.
