For decades, restoration contractors have been helping home and business owners pick up the pieces and restore their lives after traumatic events. In 1996, RIA created the Phoenix Awards to recognize excellence in the areas of restoration and reconstruction, and each year since then, companies have been honored for their heroic efforts in restoring and rebuilding homes and commercial buildings impacted by fires, floods and other perils. This year, the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Restoration was shared by eight firms that collaborated on a restoration project at an air traffic control tower at a busy U.S. airport. Each member of the team was responsible for a specific aspect of the project; by combining their expertise, they were able to accomplish something many thought was impossible. The winning firms were: the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (Washington, D.C.); LRC Indoor Testing and Research (Gary, N.C.); Durbin Environmental Consultants (Suwanee, Ga.); Building Science Corporation (Westford, Mass.); BBJ Environmental Solutions (Riverview, Fla.); Envirotech Clean Air (Stoneham, Mass.); Regency DKI (Clinton Township, Mich.); and Wonder Makers Environmental, Inc. (Kalamazoo, Mich.).
